Kestle Barton and Helford river
Kestle Barton is set deep in the Lizard countryside, surrounded by rolling hills and ancient woodlands. On a scorching hot day, we headed south and along single track roads towards the collection of converted farm barns.
Tom Cross trained at the Slade and later became principal at Falmouth School of Art. I loved the geometric forms and bold colour combinations in his abstract paintings, produced in the 1960s and 1970s.
From here, we walked across the meadow and into the woodland, following Kestle Barton's circular route along the stream, towards the Helford River.
Set at the edge of the river, Helford is an picture perfect village. Here we found calm waters, idyllic bright white cottages and pretty gardens. It seemed a perfect place to stop for lunch, so we found a shaded table with views of the river below at the Shipwrights Arms.
