Eat | The Cornish Arms, St Merryn

Padstow is jokingly referred to as 'Padstein', such is the proliferation of Rick Stein eateries in the small Cornish town. When there, it is hard to resist the call of Stein's Fish & Chips, one of my personal favourites and just five minutes from the harbour.

On this occasion through, we were on the hunt for something comforting and familiar, a pub lunch. With this in mind, we drove the short drive along the coast road out of Padstow and towards St Merryn to The Cornish Arms.

The Cornish Arms offers simple British pub food, based on Rick Stein's recipes and overseen by head chef Alex Clark. The pub is set back from the road and overlooks the beautiful Cornish countryside. A flurry of pretty window boxes and roses adorn the outside, with plenty of outdoor seating, making the most of the gorgeous setting.

Inside, the pub is split into two dining areas, and we chose the new barn extension; with exposed beams, light flooding in from the huge windows and rolling Cornish hills beyond. I was happy to find that the pub serves hearty portions of British classics. We started with mussels, going on to devour chicken salad (me) and Cornish sausages with mash and gravy (him).

Huge thanks to The Cornish Arms who kindly offered us a discount on our meal. We'll certainly be back soon!
